According to the official website of the European Union, the most critical lithium sulfur research project in Europe supported by the horizon 2020 framework plan, the lithium sulfur battery project for electric vehicles (alise), has developed lithium sulfur batteries with an energy density of more than 310 watt hours / kg. This kind of battery is more portable, energy density is large, and no key raw materials are needed. Alise project is committed to the research and development of new materials and the electrochemical treatment process involved in lithium sulfur technology (TRL4). Its project goal is to develop a 500 watt hour / kg stable lithium sulfur battery, mainly including battery durability, battery testing, battery life cycle evaluation, etc., to ensure the safety, recyclability and competitive low cost of the battery. At present, ALISE has made substantial breakthroughs in new battery components, battery cell integration and related architectures. At present, lithium sulfur battery is a more portable electric vehicle power battery than lithium-ion battery, which only reaches 17% of the theoretical energy density of sulfur (2600 watt hours / kg) at the level of 440 watt hours / kg. By improving the materials, components and manufacturing process, the energy density of lithium sulfur battery can be 800 watt hours / kg. The test data shows that the weight of lithium-ion batteries with the same volume is reduced by 15%, and the electric driving range of the hybrid vehicles with lithium-ion batteries and plug-in batteries is increased by about 2% to 10% respectively.
